Staff and Board of Directors

HopeShares Canada is operated by a dedicated group of staff and volunteer Board of Directors. Each member brings vast experience and passion to the organization.

Carl Waldron, HopeShares Executive Director

The first time I traveled to South Africa, in 2004, I sensed my life was about to change. I met volunteers from Bhekulwandle township who were showing God’s compassion to neighbors and friends in the midst of the AIDS crisis. I also caught a vision for building a healthy, vibrant community over many long talks with Seed of Hope founders Derek and Heather Liebenberg. In 2007, my family and I moved to the Durban area to lead the work of Seed of Hope, after Derek’s passing. I have felt a personal and professional calling to Seed of Hope as it brings transformation to Bhekulwandle and other communities. While my primary focus is in South Africa, it has been a privilege to help establish HopeShares Canada as an integral partner in this vision. Together with our three children, my wife Michelle and I have embraced this fulfilling and challenging family mission. Our normal home life these days includes kids’ swimming, soccer and ballet, weekly pick-up basketball, and trying to keep the kitchen free of monkeys, ants and the occasional snake. In Spring 2017, Carl and his family returned to Canada to mentor our South African team as they grow. He’ll also be working to link new partners here in Canada to international development in a way that affirms the importance of building mutual relationships between people here and those across the world.

Naomi Provencal, Administrator

I have worked in the non-profit sector for 19 years in fund-raising, marketing and volunteer management. I have a passion for helping organizations run effectively. while meeting the needs of the people they serve. I have not had the chance to make it to Africa yet but hope to one day. My husband, JP, and I have four children who keep us busy.

David Friesen, President

I have been drawn to HopeShares by the people that make up this organization and its significant impact on the community of Bhekulwandle. and am honored to serve on the board. I am the founder of Friesen Capital Management, a multi- family office group within Richardson GMP Limited, a firm with $28 Billion in assets under management. Over a 20 year career in managing wealth, I have been committed to assisting high net worth individuals, trusts, estates, and business in planning and the management of their affairs. My wife, Leslie and I reside west of Calgary with our family of 4 teenagers. As a family we spend as much time in the mountains as we can, skiing in winter and hiking in the summer. I also help coach rugby for the Cochrane’s Bow Valley Bears.

James Gillies, Vice-President

My wife Tracey knew Derek and Heather Liebenberg before they moved to South Africa. Through her passion for their work I have developed a desire to serve God by continuing the vision of Derek and Heather. I was chair of the First Annual 18 Holes for Hope golf tournament in support of HopeShares. I am recently semi-retired from a career in land development, construction and building engineering. I keep myself busy volunteering with my church , supporting Canadian Forces veterans and underprivileged children through various organizations. My wife Tracey and I have 5 children and 2 grandchildren and spend our spare time boating, golfing, skiing and traveling.

Graham Thiessen, Treasurer

My vision in life and business is to make a positive difference in the lives of others. To accomplish this vision my focus is on building relationships with people and serving others. The values that I believe in personally and as a company are honesty, integrity, humility and serving others around us. A quote that I have identified with and am striving to accomplish is from Ron Baker who states, “The best professionals, in any of the professions, are those who care deeply about their customers as fellow humans”

Trish Pritchard, Board Secretary

When my husband John and I were trying to figure out where we should minister we met Derek Liebenberg. He invited our family to come for 6 months to work alongside him and Heather and help run the Seed of Hope South Africa back in 2005. Seven weeks into the trip, Derek died of a massive heart attack and it became very clear exactly why God had called us to be there for such a time. The remaining months changed our lives incredibly with the hardships and grieving we all endured. This is why I am so passionate to serve the HopeShares Board in helping the Seed of Hope grow and expand and change people’s lives! John and I have been married for 30 years, have three grown children and three beautiful grandchildren. I am a certified Birth Doula, helping women and couples in their labour/birth experience.

Gerry Provencal, Director

Gerry traveled to Seed of Hope in the fall of 2010 for a two week MTO with Centre Street Church. It was the first of a series of God-orchestrated steps to a more involved role. He has transitioned from Visitor; to a position as a Director on the Canadian Board of Directors; to accepting a proposed position as the volunteer Director of Canadian Operations effective September, 2011. He has felt God’s hand in guiding him to the role of supporting the Canadian Board of Directors by managing the day-to-day operations and communication needs of HopeShares as they serve the people of Bhekulwandle through the staff at Seed of Hope South Africa. Gerry relishes the chance to be “significant” in moving from a previous career in Law Enforcement to Kingdom work for the Lord.

Doug Sedore, Director

Doug has been part of HopeShares since its inception. He has traveled to Seed of Hope on a number of occasions and is truly committed to helping those in need whether it is in South Africa or in his local community. Doug is pastor at the Church of the Nazarene as well as involved in running a local ministry to help people reintegrate into the community while dealing with their addictions.
